A Message from Maureen Jensen, Our New Principal

Starting this new school year at Stony Point feels like coming home.

When I arrived at the University of Virginia to earn a degree in Curriculum and Instruction after having spent several years teaching in a few other states, I didn’t realize that Albemarle County would be my forever home. In 2008, I joined ACPS as a teacher at Jack Jouett Middle School while completing an Educational Specialist degree at UVA, and from there spent some time at Burley Middle School and in the Central Office as a Lead Instructional Coach for English.

Shortly after my move from Philadelphia to Virginia, I met my husband, Kris, who grew up right here on Stony Point Road, and after a few short years, I knew that this is where my heart would stay. We were fortunate enough to have our son, Nicholas, attend SPES.  He had the most wonderful experience and after he moved on to middle school, I knew Stony Point Elementary was where I wanted to be.

As a school year like no other concluded, we here at ACPS were proud to offer students the option to receive free, in-person instruction over the summer. Our program was chock full of curriculum, the mornings containing lessons designed by our own teachers; an hour of Camp Invention, in which students got hands-on experience with different technologies; and afternoons that included classes offered by various community partners. We were overjoyed to see about 50 students each week, and can’t wait until our full student body is back in session.

As we look forward to this new school year, we return with an updated mask policy. During its July 8 meeting, the School Board approved a new policy that allows students, staff, and visitors to choose not to wear a mask when outdoors on school property.

When students are not present in a school building or school bus, staff may remove their mask indoors. However, masks must continue to be worn when interacting with a visitor, other staff, or students when six feet of physical distance cannot be maintained.

With this new school year, there is one thing in particular that I am looking forward to, and that is being able to continue to build our Stony Point community. We’ve all adapted our way and persevered through a year that no one could have ever predicted, and I believe we’ve come out stronger on the other side.

I cannot quite convey the level of excitement I feel when I picture our students back in classrooms with their friends participating in morning meetings and being able to greet each other face to face. I am eager for our school to return to some level of consistency and normalcy to provide the best possible learning environment for our students.

This year I’ve chosen a school theme to serve as a beacon for our work.  Stony Point’s 2021-2022 theme is Learning & Laughter.  I think this very simple theme encompasses both our school-wide academic and social and emotional goals. I can’t wait to learn and laugh with you all through this next school year!

SPES Recognized as a Common Sense School

Keswick, VA—Common Sense, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of media and technology, has recognized Stony Point Elementary as a Common Sense School.

Stony Point has demonstrated its commitment to taking a whole-community approach to preparing its students to think critically and use technology responsibly to learn, create, and participate while preparing them for the perils that exist in the online realm, such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyber bullying. With the right support, kids can take ownership of their digital lives, engage with real issues, and change their communities for the better. The recognition acknowledges our school's commitment to creating a culture of digital citizenship.

"We applaud the faculty and staff of Stony Point Elementary for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students' education," said Liz Kline, vice president of education programs at Common Sense Education. "Stony Point deserves high praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate ethically in society at large."

Stony Point has been using Common Sense Education's innovative and research-based digital citizenship resources, which were created in collaboration with researchers from Project Zero, led by Howard Gardner at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and are grounded in the real issues students and teachers face. The resources teach students, educators, and parents tangible skills related to internet safety, protecting online reputations and personal privacy, media balance, managing online relationships, and media literacy. The free K–12 curriculum is used in classrooms across all 50 states, in more than 80,000 schools by more than 1,00,000 educators.

"We're honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School," said Principal LaTishia Wilson. "By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them an opportunity to build lifelong habits to help them succeed in a tech-driven world."

A Message From Our Principal Ms. Wilson

Greetings Stony Point Families! Happy Friday! I have an important message for you, as well as some additional updates and information. 

I will begin with the updates and information, but I ask that you please read this message in its entirety.

  • Monday, April 26th: Parent Portal reopens and your child's report card will be available to view
  • You may sign up for the SPES April Food Bank (pick ups on 4/30/21) by copying and pasting the following link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0b4ca9ab2eaafa7-stony2
  • We want to hear from you! We have divided our school community into 3 parts so that we can host Community Listening Forums in which you can share your feedback in smaller groups.  This week we will host forums on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Please see the attached flyers (of which physical copies were sent home) to see when the forum for your community will be held. We hope to see you there!
  • We need your help! If you are interested in helping coordinate and create our 5th grade memory books, please email me at lwilson2@k12albemarle.org

And finally, the message that I want to share with you is that I will be stepping down as our school’s principal to relocate to the Virginia Beach area when our school year ends in June.  Some of you may know that this past year, my husband accepted a very attractive position in that area and I have been commuting back and forth since then.   While this gave me the opportunity to continue to work with you in support of our students at Stony Point, it is not a long term solution for my family.

It has been a privilege to serve with such a talented and devoted faculty and staff and to collaborate with a community so engaged in and supportive of the education of our students.  At no time were these qualities more needed, more valued, and more appreciated than during this past year.  I’m grateful to have been your principal these past three years and will do all I can to ensure a successful conclusion to this school year and a smooth transition to new leadership. 

In the near future you will be receiving information from our school division about that transition; specifically how a new principal will be selected and how you can contribute to this important decision.  Daphne Keiser, who will be facilitating this process, will be sharing a little about this process at the next PTO meeting on Tuesday, May 4th at 8:00pm.  Please be on the lookout for the zoom link to the meeting.

Community Dragon Blast 4/14

Greetings Stony Point families!

I hope you were able to enjoy spring break with your children! We are so happy to see all of the students back in school this week!  Here are a few announcements for you.  

General:

  • The SPES masks have arrived!! If you have a student who attends school in person-and you have already sent in payment for your mask(s)- your order was sent home with your student.  If you have not yet sent in payment, please send in the amount of $10 for each mask ordered and they will be sent home.  If you have a virtual student, you may drop off payment for the mask(s) and them up on Monday or if you are signed up for bus delivery- they will be delivered this Friday. Also, we still have masks available to order! 
  • This week marks the beginning of the 4th quarter of the school year. Parent portal is now closed and will reopen Monday, April 26th. When it re-opens, your child's report card will be available to view. 
  • Online registration opens for new students and upcoming K students for the 2021-2022 school year on April 21st.

The last day of school for students is June 15th, so please be aware when making summer plans.

Attendance:

  • Parents: It is necessary that your students attend school every day whether in person or virtual.  Virtual students need to be present during the time of their class via zoom in order to be counted present for school. Hybrid 4th and 5th graders should complete their asynchronous assignments on the days they are not physically in school in order to be counted present for the asynchronous days. There is also a morning meeting for 4th and 5th grade students on their asynchronous days via zoom.

Students in Grades 3-5: 

Parents: Please review the attached document and complete the applicable form at the bottom of the document related to the end of year testing for your student.  For your ease the links are also included below.  Please complete the applicable form for your child by this Friday, April 16th.
